Sideshow At Port Eliot Festival 2011

Hello All,

Just returned from a glorious weekend at  Port Eliot Festival where Sideshow was exhibiting it’s first travelling show complete with all carnival signs!

Much fun was had by all and more posts about the weekend will happen over the next few days but for now I thought I’d post a picture to show you all what it looked like.

Thanks to all who came down and helped out. We’ve had some really positive feedback and people’s reactions to the display made it all worth doing.

More coming soon!

Postcards at Port Eliot

Just finished the last few bits of the Sideshow sign and am pleased to say it’s all looking good.

We start the travelling show with our first festival of the Summer at Port Eliot, St Germans in Cornwall. We’re heading down this Tuesday to set up and the festival kicks off on Thursday at midday, to find out what’s on the bill, click here.

Above are the set of postcards that we’ll be selling whilst we’re on tour. The set consists of four images by Jason Butler backed with four poems by Will Burns. We’ll also have copies of Structo magazine with Sideshow on the front cover and a few posters of Toothless Mouth. All are limited and only available at the travelling shows throughout the summer.

Thanks to Maria for helping with the postcards and hope to see you all at Port Eliot.

National Portrait Gallery’s ‘500 Portraits’ book

Jason Butler’s painting ‘Eddie 1’ has been chosen as one of 500 works to be displayed in the National Portrait Gallery’s ‘500 Portraits’, a prestigious new hardback book celebrating the British Portrait Award. Since 1990, over 2000 works have been shown in the award and the publication is intended to display the broad range of styles and subject matter contained within the exhibitions history. Sandy Nairne, Director of the National Portrait Gallery has written the foreword.

The painting selected was painted from life in 2001 and displayed at the NPG in 2002. The sitter is Eddie Riou, a family friend of Jason.

The book is available now from the National Portrait Gallery and coincides with the BP Portrait Award exhibition currently on display in the gallery until 18th September 2011.

Toothless Mouth at Wilton’s Music Hall

As Sideshow is getting involved with LoCo’s Week Of Transformations at Wilton’s Music Hall in August we thought we’d post a video each week in the run up to the event filmed at the world’s oldest music hall featuring a poetry reading by Will Burns.

Here’s the first one…

Sideshow Signs

A few of you have been asking to see how we’re getting on with the signs we’re making for the travelling Sideshow exhibition so we thought we’d post a couple of photos for you to have a nosey at.  These signs will advertise our presence at festivals all over the country this summer, hanging from a marquee, Music Hall walls, a yurt and lastly a horsebox. Coming along pretty nicely, we’re sure you’ll agree. Lights are to be added in the next week or so… come and see the finished erection at Port Eliot in a couple of week’s time!

Transformations At Wilton’s Music Hall

News just in… LoCo – London Comedy Film Festival are in residence at Wilton’s Music Hall for their Festival of Transformations. From Monday 8th – Friday 12th August, LoCo will be screening five classic body-swap comedies at the world’s oldest surviving music hall along with amazing live acts before the movies and DJ’s in the bar until late into the night.

Amongst all this activity, Sideshow will be displayed too. LoCo asked us to get on board as part of their Transformations theme, and as Sideshow is an exhibition of drawings and poetry exploring the lives of the people in and around the fairgrounds, penny gaffs and music halls of an older England and the transformative effect of the carnival – it seemed a good fit especially as it will be housed in a side room upstairs at the fantastic Wilton’s.

Wilton’s is the oldest surviving Grand Music Hall in the world. It belongs to the first generation of public house music halls that appeared in London during the 1850s and which, only fifty years later, had all but disappeared. Close to Tower Bridge and run by a small and dedicated team of people, it’s one of London’s most magical venues. Check out the virtual tour of the building here. Wilton’s is very much in need of your help and for every ticket bought for the Festival Of Transformations, £3 will be donated to Wilton’s Restoration Fund which helps save this unique building.

More information about this special LoCo event can be found on their website and tickets are available here.
